Open federation for Google Talk

We've just announced for the Google Talk service. What does that mean, you might be wondering. No, it has nothing to do with Star Trek. "Open federation" is technical jargon for when people on different services can talk to each other. For example, email is a federated system. You might have a .edu address and I have a Gmail address, but you and I can still exchange email. The same for the phone: there's nothing that prevents Cingular users from talking to Sprint users.

Unfortunately, this is not the case with many IM and Internet voice calling services today. You can only talk to people on the particular service you have an account on (so you need an account on every service to talk to everybody, which is pretty cumbersome). With open federation, you get to choose your service provider and you can talk to people on any other federated service (and vice versa).

In addition to the Google Talk service, many other companies, universities, and corporations support open federation today. This means you can now talk to millions of users around the world all with a single account on the service provider of your choice.

We think this is pretty exciting -- though perhaps not as exciting as something and we hope it will bring us one step closer to making IM and Internet voice calling as ubiquitous as email.

Yahoo! Acquires Online Advertising Company

Yahoo! today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Right Media Inc., creator of the Right Media Exchange. The acquisition of Right Media will build upon Yahoo!’s leadership in online advertising and is a key step towards executing the Company’s long-term strategy to transform how online advertisers connect to and engage with their customers - both on and off the Yahoo! network. Under the terms of the agreement, which follows Yahoo!’s 20 percent strategic investment in Right Media in October 2006, Yahoo! will acquire the remaining equity interest in Right Media for approximately $680 million. Shareholders will be paid in approximately equal parts cash and stock, and Right Media options and similar equity awards will be assumed by Yahoo!.

“The acquisition of Right Media will further Yahoo!’s goal to create the industry’s most open, accessible and vibrant advertising marketplace, which will help democratize the buying and selling of digitally enabled advertising,” said Terry Semel, chairman and CEO of Yahoo!. “This acquisition is an important step in our long-term vision to build the industry’s leading advertising and publisher ecosystem. December U.S. Search Engine Rankings

Networks today released its monthly Search analysis of activity across competitive search engines. In December 2006, Google Sites captured 47.3 percent of the U.S. search market, gaining 0.4 share points from the previous month. Yahoo! Sites grew 0.3 share points, maintaining its second place ranking with 28.5 percent of U.S. searches, followed by Microsoft Sites (10.5 percent), Ask Network (5.4 percent) and Time Warner Network (4.9 percent).

Americans conducted 6.7 billion searches online in December, up 1 percent versus November. Annual growth rates in search query volume remained strong with a 30-percent increase since the same month a year ago.

Google Sites led the pack with 3.2 billion search queries performed, followed by Yahoo Sites (1.9 billion), MSN-Microsoft (713 million), Ask Network (363 million), and Time Warner Network (335 million).

Start-up to launch free wireless network in S.F.

A Mountain View, Calif.-based start-up is planning to build a free wireless Internet network in central San Francisco, and all residents have to do put a small wireless router supplied by the company in their window or rooftop. plans, within months, to bring free wireless Internet access to about 15,000 residents who live in parts of the Mission, Castro, Duboce Park, Lower Haight and Alamo Square neighborhoods.

Residents and businesses in those areas can to receive a free Meraki wireless router that will serve as relay points for data transmissions across the mesh network. The devices, which normally sell for about $50, extend the transmissions about 150 feet into buildings and enable neighbors to use the network as well. Meraki founder and Chief Executive Sanjit Biswas says the surfing and download speeds won't be as fast as DSL but will still be broadband speed, anywhere from half a megabit to 1 megabit per second--fast enough to watch videos on YouTube.

This network is likely to be up and running before the controversial Google-EarthLink network is. The to provide citywide wireless Internet access, with a free service provided by Google and a faster service provided by EarthLink for a monthly fee, but opposition has prevented the deal from being given final approval from the city's board of supervisors.

Opponents fear the Google service will be ad-supported like many of Google's existing Internet services are; that the plan lacks adequate consumer privacy protections; and that the signals will miss many residents because they will not extend deep enough inside of buildings. As a solution Google has said that residents would be able to buy $50 devices--from Meraki--to broaden the reach of the signals. Google was an angel investor in Meraki and has purchased Meraki's devices for the free wireless network the search giant set up in Mountain View.

Meraki's San Francisco test "was not designed in anticipation of the Google (wireless) project, but it would be compatible with that model," Biswas says. Meraki has not decided on a business model yet for its "experiment" in San Francisco, but has not ruled out advertising or sponsorships, he says.

Meraki helps businesses, organizations and communities create mesh wireless networks and has provided equipment for low-income housing projects, as well as projects in Venezuela and Slovakia.

Google Offers 'Themes' For Personalized Homepage

There's a flurry of activity in the newly invigorated personalized homepage category. Within the past two weeks all the major competitors have made announcements. First, AOL launched followed by the release of "" on Then launched. Yesterday unveiled " its next product release with new content modules. And tonight Google went public with "themes" (skins) for its (GPH).

The designs are not yet live on the site so I'm unable to link to them (here's a screen capture from).

Google is initially offering six different themes that allow users to further customize GPH. These themes occupy the top of the page -- the area containing the Google search box. The content headings take on a color consistent with the theme but the majority of the page remains white.

The themes are also dynamic and change according to local weather and time of day.

The graphics seek to bring warmth and personality to GPH. The new themes, which will likely grow in number over time, do accomplish that goal in my opinion. The other competitors, including MyYahoo, seem a bit more aesthetically dry by comparison.

Interestingly Google told me that GPH was the company's fastest growing product in 2006.

April 16 (Bloomberg) -- Google Inc., the most-popular Web search engine, agreed to sell advertising time for more than 675 U.S. radio stations run by Clear Channel Communications Inc.

The accord lets advertisers bid on Clear Channel radio spots through Google's online ad-sales system, according to a statement today from the two companies. Google will target companies that typically advertise on the Internet, not radio.

The agreement is Google's biggest since it bought DMarc Broadcasting Inc. in January 2006 to help crack the $18 billion radio ad market. With DMarc, Google got software that helps companies place and track radio ads. That technology will help Clear Channel, the largest U.S. radio broadcaster, tap a new group of advertisers.

``It's a good win for Google from the standpoint that Clear Channel is the big kahuna of the radio world,'' Martin Pyykkonen, an analyst with Global Crown Capital in San Francisco, said in an interview. ``It remains to be seen whether Google will be better than their other media buyers or just one more player in the offline world.''

He rates Google shares ``overweight'' and doesn't own any.

Good for Clear Channel

``It's certainly a positive for Clear Channel,'' David Bank, an RBC Capital Markets analyst in New York, said in an interview. ``There'll be some incremental revenue but we don't know how much.'' Bank rates Clear Channel ``outperform'' and doesn't own the shares.

Google will sell less than 5 percent of San Antonio-based Clear Channel's ads on U.S. stations, Clear Channel spokeswoman Michele Clarke said. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Clear Channel plans to start making broadcast time available for the ads on almost all its U.S. radio stations, including in Los Angeles and New York, by the end of June.

Spots throughout the day will be sold through Google, Clarke said, including morning drive time, when audiences tend to be the largest. Each spot offered will be 30 seconds long.

Advertisers will be able to choose markets and stations by format type, though not specific stations, Clarke said.

XM, EchoStar

Shares of Mountain View, California-based Google rose $7.98, or 1.7 percent, to $474.27 at 4 p.m. in Nasdaq Stock Market composite trading. They have gained 3 percent this year. Shares of Clear Channel rose 11 cents to $36.35 on the New York Stock Exchange and have risen 2.3 percent this year.

The agreement helps Google as it expands beyond the Internet to radio, television and newspapers. ``Clear Channel is taking a segment of their advertising and making it available to Google,'' company spokesman David Krane said by telephone from Las Vegas.

Google last year signed a deal with XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. to sell spots to Web search advertisers. It has also agreed to sell time for radio broadcaster Emmis Communications Corp.

``It's pretty small potatoes right now,'' Patrick Walsh, the Emmis chief financial officer, said today at an investor conference hosted by A.G. Edwards & Sons. Google accounts for less than 1 percent of sales, he said. ``We'll look very closely at what Clear Channel is doing.''

Earlier this month, Google said it would sell advertising on EchoStar Communications Corp.'s Dish satellite-TV service. Customers will bid for ad slots across EchoStar's 125 channels and can choose when and where their ads appear.

In November, Google said it would test sales of advertising space in 50 U.S. newspapers.

Google to sell radio ads through Clear Channel

Google will sell 30-second radio ads on the Clear Channel Radio network of AM and FM stations.

PARIS (04/16/2007) - Google Inc. has struck a deal with Clear Channel Communications Inc. to sell 30-second audio ads on its AM and FM radio stations, reinforcing Google's advertising sales business beyond the Web.

The deal, announced on Monday, comes two weeks after Google announced that it will sell slots on EchoStar Communications Corp. digital satellite television service. It also comes several days after Google announced it has agreed to buy DoubleClick Inc. for US$3.1 billion in cash. DoubleClick's advertiser network is expected to strengthen Google's ad business.

The Clear Channel deal will give Google access to a guaranteed proportion of the 30-second slots on the 675 Clear Channel stations covered by the deal. Clear Channel and Google also announced plans to link their respective advertising sales systems, Viero and AdSense for Audio.

Google's move into radio was signalled in January 2006 when it bought dMarc Broadcasting Inc., the Newport Beach, California, developer of an automated advertising platform for the broadcast industry. It waited until December to unveil its plans for dMarc, saying that it had spent the year forming partnerships with U.S. terrestrial and satellite radio stations to give advertisers involved in the beta trial hundreds of stations to choose from.

Advertisers using AdSense for Audio will be able to target messages by audience segment, geography, day of the week or time of day using Google's audio ads service.

The deal gives Google an economic incentive to produce higher revenue from the slots, Clear Channel said. Neither company offered further financial details of the deal.

The additional sales channel will give Clear Channel access to new customers: Google will sell commodity slots of a standard length, while Clear Channel's own sales staff will focus on customers requiring special formats, a service the company has been developing recently to increase its revenue per minute.

The companies already have an existing advertising sales relationship, in which Google sells text ads on the Web sites of Clear Channel's radio stations.

(NASDAQ: GOOG), today announced a multi-year agreement that enables Google to sell a guaranteed portion of 30-second advertising inventory available on more than 675 of Clear Channel's AM/FM stations. Specific financial terms are not being disclosed.

Under the agreement, Google™ Audio Ads advertisers will have national distribution, enabling them to reach specific audiences, at specific times, in targeted geographies. For Clear Channel, this agreement opens up an additional sales channel and provides supplemental revenue by making Clear Channel inventory available to advertisers who previously had not used radio.

Just like when a tree falls in the forest, and there is no one to hear it, the sound waves it generates simply dissipate before the sound can be heard. So how do you spread the word that your Web site is there and start attracting the right audience to your site? One approach is to market the site heavily by splashing your URL via ads all over the place (paid), and the other is to generate traffic organically.

Both paid Web site marketing efforts and efforts to generate organic traffic have their benefits, but leveraging the long-term benefits of organic traffic can mean the difference between a successful and unsuccessful Web site.

Paid Web Site Market

Paid Web site marketing has the advantage of driving traffic immediately to your Web site. This is great for launching a site, or for a special promotion. Popular paid options include (but are not limited to):

Newspaper magazine and TV ads
Purchasing of banner ads on other Web sites
Launching a Search Engine Marketing (SEM) campaign, and
Distributions of mass emails and press releases

A secondary benefit of paid Web site marketing is that when done properly, it can help lay the seeds of organically generated traffic.

Organic Traffic

Organic traffic, as the name implies, is traffic that comes to your Web site naturally and without being driven there by a specific marketing campaign. In essence, Web site visitors are there because they found the site and thought it had something they wanted. And like anything organic, organic traffic isn’t there instantly; it takes time and nurturing to grow into something healthy and with longevity.

Organic traffic happens in the same way that you might browse the bookshelf at your local library or bookstore for something in a specific area of interest and find that little treasure that contains all the answers you’re seeking. This is, more or less, what the Web was all about when it was first created. Sources of organic traffic include:

referrals from other Web sites (links)
referrals from search engines, and
URLs placed on letterhead, business cards, etc.

Organic or Paid: Which One Is Right for My Site?

The choice between organic or paid isn’t a black-and-white issue. You need to examine your budget and the benefits you’ll get for your effort. In essence, you need to work out your Even with a small budget, you can launch an SEM campaign and start driving traffic today. This is an especially wise option when you’ve launched an ecommerce site and want to start making sales immediately. Generally, for well under a dollar per click, you can purchase keyword-based ads through By driving traffic immediately, you’ve started attracting eyeballs and that’s a good thing. What you are really trying to do is buy time until organic traffic kicks in. If you already have some organic traffic, a paid campaign can give you an immediate boost as well.

One mistake that is commonly made is to rely solely on paid techniques and to ignore organic traffic. So while you have the attention of Web site visitors via your paid campaign, use this opportunity to extract the seeds for your organic operation. Start encouraging Web site visitors to link to you from their sites. Affiliate programs are a wonderful incentive to grow the number of links to your site.

By running an SEM campaign, you can also pull seeds from your Web site access logs. While you might have purchased some single keywords or two/three keyword combinations, 38% of all searches are of 3 or more words (Jupiter Media). This means that while you have purchased the phrase XY, the person who clicked on your ad actually searched on ABXY or BXYZ etc. By extracting these terms from the access logs, and correlating which actual phrases turned into a successful visit (sale/lead/other), you now know which terms to emphasize, and which ones to remove from the Web site, as part of optimizing the content for the search engines (an organic component).

Once you know your primary keywords and phrases (the seeds) and have started generating links to your site (the fertilizer), it’s time make the seeds grow. You need to optimize your site for the search engines.

You’ll need to review your Web page title tags and make sure they are unique and contain the appropriate keyword phrases. According to too many companies simply insert their company name in the title tag. That’s fine if you’re Coke, and yet don’t you think Coke wants to be found even if people type “cola” in their favorite search engine?

Next on your hit list is the description meta tag. All too often, I’ve discovered these missing or so poorly written that they may actually hinder ranking well in a search engine. While you’re rewriting your title and description tags, don’t forget the keywords meta tag. Very few (if any) of the major search engines continue to give any value to these variables, but it still doesn’t hurt.

Now it’s time to examine the content of your Web page. Are those keywords/phrases there in the content? Are they there in the text? If you’ve made a clever graphic of the words, it is merely a graphic; the bots that search engines send out to index sites are blind to graphics and ignore (or severely discount) image alt attribute values.

If you’ve used graphics for navigation, try replacing the same links as plain text at the bottom of your page. If you have graphics for section headings, delete the graphic and replace it with an H1 or H2 tag (search engines give great value to words contained in H1 or H2 tags). Of course, you’ll need to set up an appropriate class in your cascading style sheet to emulate (or approximate) the existing look and feel.

If you’ve built your site entirely in Flash, there really isn’t much you can do beyond the meta tags (and see my next column).

Now you’re ready for the search engines to start crawling your site. Of course, you’ll have to wait for your listing to start to appear higher and higher in search results. Just as a wheat field doesn’t appear overnight, search engines may take as long as four months to start listing your site.

Once you’re ranked well in the search engines, you can reap the benefits of the organic traffic. Some people tend to think of organic traffic as free traffic (versus paid traffic). As you can see, there is a lot of work involved in sowing the seeds of organic traffic and this work has a cost, but once the initial work is completed you’ll be essentially receiving traffic for free. Don’t let your garden go unattended for long; you’ll need to monitor it periodically, watching for a drop-off in traffic, and continue to make small adjustments to keep the organic traffic growing.

If you can’t wait upwards of four months for your listing to appear, many search engines like Yahoo offer paid inclusion. While this is a paid-for service, paid inclusion doesn’t necessarily guarantee you a top ranking for the site. It simply gets you in the index quickly, usually within 72 hours, and comes with guaranteed revisit frequency (we’ll re-index your site every 48 hours). The advantage of this is simple. You can continually tweak your site for better ranking. Another bit of good news (at least from Yahoo), is that if you decided not to renew your paid listing, you won’t get dropped or banned from their listings, though this may not be true for all search engines.

So now you can help drive traffic to your site. Remember, simply building a site that no one sees has zero value for your organization (okay, it may be an ego thing), but a Web site that gets visitors and generates revenue or sales leads is a valuable tool that will garner more corporate attention, and presumably a larger budget.

Well you know when you do a search in google and you get a lot of small box advertisements on the right hand side of the page? Well, they are pay-per-click ads! Web site owners have to pay a fee for each click on those ads, the higher the price they are willing to pay for each click, the higher up they appear on the search results page.

For instance, if a webmaster bids £0.05 on the term 'celtic ring'. If no other webmaster bids more than this, he will stay in 1st position. If a competitor bids £0.06, then the competitor moves into to the coveted 1st position. Thus the bidding war begins and you may find some keywords costing as much as £5.00 per click!

This form of web marketing can be highly benificial but be careful on how you want to spend your budget. Luckily, offers an option where the user can select a pre-determined monthly budget, once you reach that budget your ad is put on hold until the end of that month. If you want real targeted advertising this is my uttermost recommendation. One vital warning though; choose your keywords wisely!

History of Google Book Search

In the beginning, there was Google Book Search.

Well, not exactly. But one can certainly argue that the project is as old as Google itself. In 1996, Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page were graduate computer science students working on a research project supported by the Stanford Digital Library Technologies Project. Their goal was to make digital libraries work, and their big idea was as follows: in a future world in which vast collections of books are digitized, people would use a "web crawler" to index the books' content and analyze the connections between them, determining any given book's relevance and usefulness by tracking the number and quality of citations from other books.

The crawler they wound up building was called BackRub, and it was this modern twist on traditional citation analysis that inspired Google's algorithms – the core search technology that makes Google, well, Google.

Even then, Larry and Sergey envisioned people everywhere being able to search through all of the world's books to find the ones they're looking for. Five years ago, Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin incorporated their tiny company. The reason? So they could cash a $100,000 personal check that had been sitting in Page's desk drawer for a couple of weeks.

As Stanford graduate students, Page and Brin had been working together on a search engine they called "BackRub" since early 1996. By 1998, with the encouragement of Yahoo co-founder David Filo, they decided to start a company, and went looking for investors to back them.

From the official company history:

"As a founder of Sun Microsystems, Andy Bechtolsheim was used to taking the long view. When he saw a demo of Google he knew it had potential. A lot of potential. While he had interest, he didn't have a lot of time. According to Sergey, 'We met him very early one morning on the porch of a Stanford faculty member's home in Palo Alto. We gave him a quick demo. He had to run off somewhere, so he said, instead of us discussing all the details, why don't I just write you a check? It was made out to Google Inc. and was for $100,000.'

"The investment created a small dilemma. There was no way to deposit the check since there was no legal entity known as 'Google Inc.' It sat in Larry's desk drawer for a couple of weeks while he and Sergey scrambled to set up a corporation and locate a few other funders among family, friends and acquaintances. Ultimately, they brought in a total initial investment of almost $1 million."

Google, Inc. was established on On September 7, 1998. Following traditional silicon valley protocol, the founders hired Craig Silverstein, now Director of Technology, as their first employee, and set up shop in a friend's garage. Google at the time was still in alpha, with an index of just 25 million pages, but it was handling 10,000 search queries every day.

The company grew quickly, and on June 7 1999, the company announced that it had secured a round of funding that included $25 million from Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Buyers.

Google is now the most dominant search tool on the web, setting the standards that others try to follow and better, as yet unsuccessfully. It was founded in 1998 - relatively late compared to many of the popular search engines - by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who were graduate students from Stanford University.

Page and Brin had been working together on a search engine they called "BackRub" since early 1996, but with the encouragement of Yahoo! co-founder David Filo, they decided to start a company in 1998 and went looking for investors to back them. Google, Inc. was established on September 7, 1998. The founders hired Craig Silverstein - who was later to become Director of Technology - as their first employee, and started the business in a friend's garage.

Google was still in an alpha stage, with an index of just 25 million pages, but it was handling 10,000 search queries every day. The search engine and the company grew quickly through word of mouth, initially with regular web users coming across the tool and finding the results to their liking.

Usage spread rapidly through press coverage, awards and recommendations, whilst Google's effectiveness and relevance, its speed and reliability, plus clean visual effects and 'quirky' nature all contributed to a rapid increase in the number of new advocates.

Google took a major step forward in 2000 when it replaced Inktomi as the provider of supplementary search results on Yahoo. Following this it won further successes and provided search data to Yahoo as its primary results, as well as to AOL, Netscape, Freeserve and BBCi in the UK. This gave Google exceptional coverage of web searches and established its reputation as one of the most reliable and accurate search tools, making it the clear market leader.

Despite losing the Yahoo relationship in 2004, Google continued to increase its coverage of the web search market and developed numerous regional versions of its search tool, both in English and other languages, so that its global dominance grew. In the UK, Google now accounts for over 70% of web searches that are made.

Google has also been actively developing a range of search options, including an image search, news search, shopping search (Froogle) and local search options. In addition, following Google's IPO in early 2005 it has set itself on a course for Internet domination and to challenge the position of Microsoft as the leading provider of computer services. There has been a series of announcements of new products, including the email service Gmail, the impressive Google Earth product, Google Talk to compete in the growing VoIP market, Google Base and Google Book Search, which is part of its ambitious project to make the content of thousands of books searchable online

Google has become synonymous with search and has entered the dictionary as a verb - 'to google' something. The expansion and integration of all Google's different services is making it a dominant player in the online market, but to many websites, Google is also the ultimate ranking target that will make a significant difference between the volumes of traffic received from prospective customer ssearching the web.

According to Google lore, company founders and were not terribly fond of each other when they first met as Stanford University graduate students in computer science in 1995. Every search engine marketing professional knows Google is the top search engine. But only a few can name all 10 top search engines without looking at recent market research.

Why?

There are a couple of reasons.

For one, the list of top 10 search engines changes over time. According to Nielsen//NetRatings, Web Search, Lycos Network Search/Directories, and My Way Search have dropped off the radar screen in the past year. At the same time, Information.com, InfoSpace Web Search, and even the beta version of Microsoft Search have taken their place.

For another, even the search engines that have stayed in the top 10 have moved around in the rankings. While Google was #1 in both December 2003 and December 2004, MSN Search slid from #2 to #3, while Yahoo Search climbed from #3 to #2. While AOL Search and Ask Jeeves remained #4 and #5 respectively, Overture slid from #6 to #7, while Netscape Search climbed from #9 to #8.

The Future of Email Marketing

INTRODUCTION

Like many people in this industry, I get a lot of email - around 200 per day. Of that, around half of them are work-related, several are emails I actually requested to receive and then there are a whole bunch of 'urgent' proposals to provide me with billions of sales leads, millions of pounds for just a few hours work or the chance to add a few inches below the waist, lose a few from above the waist or check out what young farm girls like to do. Needless to say, the delete button is a trusty old friend.

It's a common experience and one that fills most e-marketing types with caution - people have been writing about (as well as sending) spam since they started writing about the internet. Most intelligent marketers know what is and what isn't spam and understand how permission-based marketing works. But it's not always about the reality, but the perception. If you don't get your campaign right, people can be quick to perceive your email as spam and, by then, there's almost no chance of rescuing that contact or lead.

MASS MAIL MAYHEM

According to Charles Ping from the Digital Marketing Association, speaking at a recent email marketing event, 200bn emails will be sent to US marketers by 2004, with consumers receiving over 1600 commercial emails per year by 2005. Given those figures, Ping says that 39% of people already think that they receive too many emails.

Of course, during this time of slashed advertising and marketing budgets and where PR is something other people do, email marketing is regularly seen as the cheap alternative. Its similarities to the tried and tested formula of direct mail only add to the attractiveness of an email campaign. However, Ping quoted US figures from Forrester, which suggest that not all is as it seems.

The figures themselves provide a note of caution, but Ping also added that the effectiveness of an email campaign may well lie in the relationship with the end user, otherwise response rates drop dramatically. More often than not, such a relationship with the customer is unlikely to be effected from an initial email, so a dialogue is essential, which costs more money and relies on the marketer's ability to foster trust.

Despite the ease with which emails can be deleted, in contrast to direct mail, Jon Davie, editor of Lastminute.com's UK email newsletter, said at the same event that users tend to see their email in-boxes as even more personal than their doormat - it may not be logical, but clearly, the directness of email correspondence provides a far more emotional response from users than direct mail.

In addition, Ping suggested that traditional marketing has had far more time to develop its modus operandi and consumer attitudes to direct mail are more fixed and controlled. Consumer attitudes to email marketing, however, are not fixed and are constantly shifting - in short, there is no guarantee that an email marketing campaign will be well received, whatever current research says. Working on such shifting sands, the e-marketer has to adopt to change even more than those working in other areas of internet advertising and marketing, and with so much negative press about spam and uncertainty about what constitutes it, recipients can have a negative view of any commercial email, whether unsolicited or not.

OPT IN vs. OPT OUT

Davie took this a step further and suggested that, even if a user has opted-in, it's wrong for marketers to believe that this gives them carte blanche to send a commercial email as and when they wish - "You can't invade my in-box, even if I give you permission to do so."

Stephen Groom, at legal firm Osborne Clark, identified what legislation has been passed on this subject. While there is still no legally recognised definition of unsolicited email, the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 defines "solicited" as: initiated by the recipient of the communication or made in response to an express request from the recipient.

Beyond that, however, legislation becomes much more confusing - the current situation suggests that the UK will have an opt-in policy, despite previous indications that favoured an opt-out policy. Currently, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany and Italy have joined the opt-in crowd, but little else has been made clear. While the DMA have professed a preference for an opt-in policy, Ping emphasised the importance of opt-in at the event, but Groom questioned whether either policy could ultimately be enforced.

Groom's best suggestion was for marketers to use their company's data protection officer, if one is available, or check out the DMA Code of Practice for Electronic Commerce and make sure records are kept.

This effectively means that marketers get one free go at an unsolicited campaign, which, given a built-in opt-out clause for future campaigns (an advised, if not binding, practice), might result in an in-house prospect database. But unless the call to action is a hugely compelling one, most databases need to be grown and nurtured and that first unsolicited email can damage that potential for good.

According to Ping, research suggests that double opt-in is still the preferred choice for consumers, with the rate of unsubscribes fastest for opt-out and slowest for opt-in. However, the frequency of emails also factor highly into the rate of unsubscribes - while a good long-term relationship is desired, it has to be practiced with patience and caution.

In addition, making too much emphasis on the one-to-one nature of email could prove damaging, according to Ping. While generally agreed to be the holy grail of marketing, "The more you make your message appear more 1-2-1, the more you intrude and risk alienation." At the same time, Lastminute.com's Davie argues that giving users exactly what they want can prove restrictive - a big problem for e-commerce is that the user often isn't aware of other products available, so providing the right promotions, products or services often comes down to the marketer's judgement and the ability to nurture a long-term relationship.

Which all goes to show how appealing and confusing email marketing can be, especially given the recent advertising slump, changing consumer attitudes and an almost total lack of agreement on standards and legislation. Ultimately, the future of email marketing is likely to be governed by those with the best ideas and the greatest compliance with current best practices. Or by that delete button.

Email Newsletters: Surviving Inbox Congestion

Only two years have passed since our For almost any other topic, conducting a new study so soon would be a waste of time. because they depend on human nature, which tends to change at a rather glacial pace. Newsletters are one of the few exceptions to this rule because their environment -- the inbox -- grows ever more crowded each year.

To assess email newsletters' current usability, we conducted a new round of user research (described below). As it turned out, all of our original findings continue to hold. The 127 design guidelines from our previous newsletter report are still valid, though we refined some in light of the new research. The main change is in volume: we added more guidelines based on additional insights derived from eyetracking studies of how users process their inbox and read their newsletters. We now have for email newsletter usability.

Our main conclusion remains the same: Email newsletters are the best way to maintain customer relationships on the Internet.

A Bleak Future for Email Marketing

Anybody who markets or advertises on the Internet should get into the habit of watching others use the medium. It can be enlightening.

A few years back, I wrote a piece titled " which was fairly well received, even though the subject of the column was a completely unscientific test. And although I wouldn't make important Web-marketing-related decisions based solely on what my mom thinks, I think marketers can gain great insight when they take a break from what they're doing and watch people engage in interaction with interactive media.

I recently went through this exercise again with several individuals, and after the exercise was over I was left questioning the future of email marketing. Although what I am about to say may bring flames galore, I think any dialogue that results from the points I am about to make will be healthy for the industry.

There... Now that that's out of the way, let me throw this out there: It's time to re-evaluate the practice of buying email lists.

While watching several different consumers access and read their email, I was struck by how similar they were in their behavior. Anything that was recognizable as commercial email that came from an organization they were unfamiliar with was immediately trashed or filtered into the trash. The only commercial mailings that didn't get trashed were from companies that the consumer remembered signing up with to receive information or offers. Standalone commercial emails from site partners were lumped in with unsolicited spam and unceremoniously dumped.

OK, watching a group of consumers access and read their email is not a scientific test, but it does raise a few questions: Are consumers so sick of spam that they are no longer open to the idea of receiving information or offers from marketers who buy double opt-in lists? Does the consumer take the time to make a distinction between the email from marketing partners of the sites they regularly visit and the run-of-the-mill spam they get every day?

I would argue that it's fairly tough for a consumer to make that distinction. Though buying a double opt-in list might ensure a marketer that the people on a given list are interested in receiving offers in a particular product category or interest, it doesn't ensure that those prospects are open to the idea of receiving those offers from anybody and everybody. I'm starting to believe that consumers have heard the "You are receiving this because you agreed to receive offers from one of our marketing partners" line so many times that they associate it with useless spam.

My observations didn't indicate in any way that consumers are tired of commercial email in general. They just seemed to be tired of getting it from organizations they weren't familiar with. Most commercial email that the participants directly signed up for was happily opened and read.

What does this tell me? Well, I think it tells me that we should re-examine the idea of buying lists on behalf of clients and instead consider the notion of helping our clients build their own lists.

I haven't seen a study yet that explores which types of commercial email are most likely to be opened and read, but I think it would be interesting if a research company benchmarked the effectiveness of unsolicited spam against legitimate list purchases and home-built lists. I think we would find some surprises.

The word on the street lately is that social networking is in trouble. Friendster's CEO, Scott Sassa (most famous for who wrote about the company) recently departed in the face of a rapidly dwindling user base. Friendster its own for-pay blogging tool as an all-too-ironic money-making scheme. Business networking site started charging for its job listings. Meanwhile, the recent launch of has the blogosphere that Friendster, the pioneer, is already on its deathbed. And Business 2.0 has a (subscription required) about how the indie music networking site is, for all intents and purposes, the only successful site, with more than $20 million in ad sales this year and plenty of long-staying subscribers.

Social networking is laboring under the inescapable weight of the dot-com curse: you have to find the money. No matter how cool your idea is, it's dead on arrival without an actual business plan. At least, that's the theory. If that's true, though, why has blogging, which seems like a neat idea dependent on interest but without a concrete revenue stream, managed to not just thrive, but really dominate the Web? How is it that free instant messengers are as indispensable as any search engine, and little guys like Trillian are still going strong? Is it really true that free services can't be effective business plans? Or is it possible that--gasp!--social networking isn't really that tenable an idea after all?

The social networking experience
I've gotten a lot of invitations to Friendster over the years, which, to be honest, I ignored. I always just assumed I didn't have time for that tomfoolery. Plus, I already had a boyfriend, and I already had friends. I know that all sounds horribly snobby, but there it is. But then, Suddenly, because I was working in the Geek Zone, my coworkers were sending me Orkut invites. Every geek I knew was into it, and the peer pressure got too strong. I signed up. I filled out my little Orkut profile (I think I even uploaded a photo), and for about three weeks, my friends, coworkers, and I obsessively hung out on Orkut. And then, suddenly, we just got bored--weirdly, all at the same time. My entire Orkut generation, all the people who'd found it at the same time I did, just up and lost interest. Of course, round about that time, Orkut got painfully slow, and although it's better now (I just checked it out in the course of writing this column--hey, maybe I'll have a resurgence of interest!), it's still a heck of a lot easier to just e-mail or instant-message the people I know.

The five horsemen
Therein, I think, lies one of the five problems I've identified with social networking, and a good segue into my list.

1. There's nothing to do there
As Business 2.0 points out, a simple destination site won't cut it. My big beef with Friendster was always, "Well, what would I do there?" Visiting most social networking sites is akin to getting invited to a party where all the cool kids are going, then showing up and finding out there's no food, no drinks, no band, no games, no pool, nothing. Just a bunch of painful small talk and leering grins. The people-watching can hold your interest for only so long.

2. It takes too much time
Yes, I know I can choose where to devote my time, but Orkut, Friendster, and even LinkedIn (which I do find more useful than the purely social sites) are interesting but less information rich than news sites, blogs, Google news, or any of the other sites I could visit on the Web. It's interesting, for example, to blog about the experiences I had on a given day, but it's tedious to make sure my personal stats, favorite books, and current reading list are up-to-date. One of the reasons I think personal blogs win out over social networking is that they're inherently more personal, more inwardly focused, and a better chance to show more than a snapshot of yourself.

3. Traffic alone isn't enough
The reality of the new Web is that traffic alone just doesn't cut it. You can get all the visitors you want to your site, but you can't just blanket the thing with ads and hope to survive. Advertisers today are a more sophisticated bunch, and they're looking to send targeted, rich-content messages. That means that reliance on a generalized supply of banner ads is not a sustainable model, because no matter how much data you collect about your audience, if the audience isn't specific, the ads can't be, either. Witness MySpace's projected $20 million in ad sales. According to Business 2.0, it's working because MySpace attracts primarily what it refers to as "16- to 34-year-old hipsters." The Web is becoming an elitist sort of space. If social networking sites are a way to bring the masses together, advertisers are begging for a way to prune those masses into smaller, easier targets.

4. Strangers kind of suck (or, put nicely, the social hierarchy is really not that attractive)
Speaking of elitism, getting to know people is, frankly, a less attractive proposal than it first seems. Sure, business networking is valuable, and it's great to have a lot of resources who might know someone who can help you with...something. But that argument gets a little thin when you're suddenly bombarded with date offers or all-too-frequent postings about the unsavory or just plain uninteresting habits of the strangers you suddenly know. Moreover, social networking sites pretty quickly and inevitably degenerate into cliques. That's normal, it happens on the blogosphere, and it's not really even that deplorable. It's just kind of tiresome on a daily basis. If you restrict your friends list to only the people you already know, well, then the boredom sets in. Why would you read their profiles over and over when you can just IM them, e-mail them, or meet at the baseball game?

5. We already have the Internet
The only lasting argument about social networking that's ever made sense is that these networks are a valuable resource if you're adrift in the sea of online information. You can, in just a few hops, get to someone who knows someone or knows something that you need to know. That may be a valuable proposal in the business world, which gives a site like LinkedIn a better chance of survival than Friendster. But the argument's a little thin in a world where search is the king of the hill. If I need information online, I can find it. And I can probably find it faster using Google than I can by e-mailing one friend who'll e-mail another who'll e-mail another while my deadline slips away. Sure, it's helpful--once in a while. But once I have all these folks in my address book, I won't be much help in terms of ad impressions.
